F. Emmanuel Bastien

 

 Emmanuel is a photographer and seasoned videographer based out of New York and Paris with more than 20 years of experience filming documentaries, commercials, fashion, live performances, and hard news, traveling the globe from Alaska to North Korea.

 

Having spent most of his career as director of photography, and a cameraman, Emmanuel employs photography is as an opportunity to explore new narratives. His poetic and non-descriptive imagery is layered with social commentary and storytelling which elicits an immediate emotional response and gives the photos staying power.  

 

In 1973, at the height of the Cambodian conflict, Emmanuel, then 9 years old, witnessed the devastation effect of war through the eyes of the many photographers and journalists that visited his parents’ house in Phnom Penh. Captivated by their stories, he became aware of the power and importance of photography in expressing and sharing social issues.

 

Publications:

In 2003 Emmanuel photographed 75 black and white images taken in Harlem, Mexico and the Mission District in San Francisco illustrating the cookbook “La Comida Del Barrio”, by chef Aaron Sanchez. Larkson Potter publishers, Random House in 2003.
